Faculty & Staff: How to Securely Erase an iPad

When you are returning or no longer using your iPad, it is crucial to securely erase it to protect your personal information and data. This guide will walk you through the steps to back up your iPad to iCloud and securely erase all content and settings.

Why It's Important

Each iPad is designed to store personal information and passwords. Securely erasing your iPad ensures that your data is protected when the device changes hands.

Before You Begin

Before erasing your iPad, you may want to back up your data to iCloud to preserve important information for future use.

How to Backup an iPad to iCloud

  1. Open Settings:

    • Tap on the Settings app on your iPad's home screen.

  2. Access iCloud:

    • In the left column, scroll down and select iCloud.

  3. Set Up iCloud:

    • Make sure iCloud is set up and turned on.

  4. Select Backup:

    • In the right column, tap on Backup.

  5. Enable iCloud Backup:

    • Ensure that the iCloud Backup toggle is turned on (it should be green).

  6. Back Up Now:

    • Tap Back Up Now to start backing up your iPad to iCloud. Wait for the process to complete.

How to Erase the iPad

  1. Open Settings:

    • Tap on the Settings app on your iPad's home screen.

  2. Select General:

    • In the left column, scroll down and select General.

  3. Access Reset Options:

    • Scroll to the bottom of the right column and tap Reset.

  4. Erase All Content and Settings:

    • Select Erase All Content and Settings from the list of options.

  5. Enter Passcode:

    • Enter your device's passcode when prompted.

  6. Confirm Erase:

    • Tap Erase and then confirm by selecting Erase again.

  7. Enter Apple ID Password:

    • Enter your Apple ID password to remove the iPad from your Apple account.

Additional Information

  • Ensure Battery Life: Make sure your iPad has enough battery life or is connected to a power source during the backup and erasing processes.

  • Backup Verification: You can verify your backup by going to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, and then selecting your device to see the backup details.

  • Factory Reset: Erasing all content and settings will restore the iPad to factory settings, removing all personal data and apps.
