This article provides information regarding computer security.

What is phishing?

Phishing is the criminal act of attempting to acquire sensitive information, like passwords, usernames, credit and/or Social Security card information, by means of masquerading as a trustworthy site or by way of an electronic communication, like an email.

How do I report a security incident?

To report a security incident or if you suspect that your computer or your sensitive information on your computer has been compromised, please immediately contact campus security, campus technical support, and other institutions who manage/use that information, like banks and credit card companies, about the possible breach.

How do I know if my Internet connection is secure?

  • One of the indicators of a secure Internet connection is that the URL starts with https://.  Also, many trusted sites will have a padlock icon or mention their encryption.  Overall, however, security is a vigilant effort that must be constantly monitored.  A few best practices to help keep you secure are:

    • Never transmit confidential information over a wireless network, especially a publicly accessible wireless network. 

    • Exercise common sense when visiting unfamiliar web pages. 

    • Never download or install content from unknown sources. 

    • Never give out confidential information, especially to unsolicited requests from web sites or email communications.

How do I protect my computer against viruses?

  • Best practices to protect your computer from viruses are to install and implement a proven anti-virus software, be mindful of visiting suspicious websites, opening unknown email messages or downloading/installing content from unknown sources.

  • Also, your current High Speed Internet Service Provider (ISP) most likely provides free antivirus software to help ensure that their networks are virus free. They also provide phone support for their software.

    • AT&T Internet Security Suite – powered by McAfee

    • Comcast – Norton Security Suite

How do I block browser pop-ups?

Each web browser handles pop-ups differently; Firefox and Safari users select “Preferences” from the application menu to manage pop-ups.  Once the Preference pane is open, users will click on the “Security” tab to manage pop-ups.  Internet Explorer users select “Pop-Up blocker” from the tools menu to manage pop-ups.

 How do I remove spyware or viruses from my computer?

  • The College does not support student's personal computing property.

  • You may want to contact the company where you purchased your computer as they often have on-site support, or can recommend the best course of action for you to take.
