Canvas LMS

What is the LMS?

The Learning Management System, or LMS, is an online software application that is designed to allow students to complete coursework through FSCJ from any location with an internet connection. It allows for the flexible delivery of course content in a variety of modalities, including textually, visually, auditorily, and interactively.

The LMS integrates with a number of robust tools for teaching:

  • Studio (for video creation and storage)

  • Respondus (for assessment development)

  • Canvas Conferences (web conferencing and synchronous teaching)

  • Turnitin (plagiarism detection and feedback)

It can also be integrated with digital content from major publishers such as Pearson, McGrawHill, and SmarterProctoring, among others.

Canvas Services and Resources

Florida State College at Jacksonville currently maintains a contract for LMS services with Canvas, who facilitate all hosting via their own managed hosting platform. Canvas is a Software as a Service (Saas) that receives regular, about once per month, uninterrupted rolling updates. The term “managed hosting” means that the software and servers are maintained and serviced by Canvas engineers to ensure stability and continuous, uninterrupted service.

Resources Provided by FSCJ

At FSCJ, we provide a number of supports to assist faculty and students with LMS usage. Note that not all of these resources are provided exclusively by Information Technology.

The Educational Technology Team

Responsible for the day-to-day management and technical maintenance of the LMS, the EdTech team can help with issues such as:

  • General questions about LMS governance and usage

  • Assistance with submitting assignments, viewing discussion boards, or creating assessments

  • Setting up Collegewide surveys and announcements

  • Creating LMS-based organizations for student or faculty collaboration

  • Resolution of LMS errors including enrollment discrepancies, course copy issues, gradebook maintenance, testing errors, and assignment uploads

  • Adding new LTI tools, Building Blocks, or Publisher content to the LMS

The EdTech team can be contacted by emailing (EdTech@fscj.edu) or by filling out a support ticket. They also contribute information about changes to the LMS on the Academic Technology Blog (at.fscj.edu). Additional information about Canvas, including where to find support resources and keys for third-party tools, can be found in the Canvas Faculty Community

The Center for eLearning

The Center for eLearning (CeL) develops, manages, and maintains all master course content that is used by FSCJ Online. In addition to course design and development services for College programs, the CeL can assist with:

  • Canvas course content upload and copying

  • Course master inventory, availability, distribution, and maintenance

  • Online course preparations and modifications
